Well I'm off to Tumblr...

Well I've had this blog for a good 4 years and unfortunately it's time to move away. Until now I've been posting on both this blog and my newer Tumblr account  - and truth be told...I like Tumblr better. I will no longer be updating this blog but I will keep it up and running for now.

To check out my current work head on over to my Tumblr page: MY TUMBLR!

The Green Power Ranger and Doctor McNinja

So I had actually commissioned two drawings from the Boston Comic-Con. This one is another Green Power Ranger with Doctor McNinja by Kent Archer. I already have the piece hanging in my studio above my desk, sorry for the glare on the photo - it's from the frame. Kent is also a former inker on Doctor McNinja - you can see his website and work here: www.kentarcher.com

Ultra Vic

My father recently celebrated his 50th birthday and this year I wanted to make something special. Some of you may be familiar with a game called "City of Heroes." City of Heroes was an MMORPG, it was a lot like World of Warcraft, except it was superhero themed. The game opened in 2004 and captured my imagination as both a gamer and comic book/superhero fan. The game ran until 2012, and admittedly I lost interest as life got busy, however my father continued to play until the very last hours that the servers were still open. The game allowed players to create dozens of their own custom superheroes, so for my father's birthday I illustrated my father's favorite character, Ultra-Vic. Bonus points if you can identify the villain at the bottom of the picture.

The Lich Snail

The school year has begun! I've been rather busy in the past week with the first week of art classes underway. Admittedly I'll have just a little less time than I did during the summer for art pieces, but I'll still be posting regular updates with some work - in fact I have quite a few works I haven't had a chance to share yet (especially more Adventure Time works). Today's sketch is the Lich-possessed snail from Adventure Time. Did you know that the snail appears in *EVERY* episode of Adventure Time?

Original art available in my store.

Busy Busy Busy

Well I've been pretty busy recently, between working on a few of my own illustration pieces, art for Minion, and some sketches (mostly Adventure Time ones for now...). So here's a quick snapshot of my drawing desk (you'll see more of those drawings in the future).

For my smaller sketches like most of my recent Adventure Time works I've been working on 9x12 Bristol Board, pencil first, and then inks and marker on top. With the larger illustration pieces I've generally been working out sketches, comps, and pencils digitally and printing them out in light blue on 11x17 Bristol Board, on which I then ink, scan the piece, and color digitally. I've tried inking digitally, and even bought Clip Studio Paint EX (also known as Manga Studio - though I believe they are in the process of switching their names over), but nothing beats inking traditionally for me.

Farmworld Finn the Human

So I just started seasons 5. I'm really amazed at how well done and well thought out this show is. It has truly surprised me and gone beyond my expectations. The Farmworld episode was pretty interesting, though more than anything else it made me like Simon Petrikov's character even more. He by far is my favorite in the series. This and other original art pieces available in my store.

The Green Power Ranger by Derek Hunter

So while I was at Boston Comic Con I spent most of my time checking out artist alley. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I sat in on an Adventure Time panel with a few people who worked on the comics/show. I love original art, so I asked Derek Hunter, a background artist for the show to draw one of my favorite childhood characters, the Green Power Ranger. I just got it in the mail and I'm really excited to hang it up in my studio space. You can check out Derek's website and work by clicking on this link!

The Earl of Lemongrab

Guess which episode in season 4 of Adventure Time I just watched?

8/18/14

Lumpy Space Princess

Well I've almost finished season 4 of Adventure Time. I'll more than likely just keep sketching some more Adventure Time characters while I watch the show. Today's lumping sketch is of the Lumpy Space Princess herself. I've added this and a bunch of other original art pieces to my store!

8/15/14

Sonic the Hedgehog Sketch

I don't think I've really drawn Sonic before, or at the very least not in a long time. While I was scanning my video game library I came upon "Sonic Generations" and ta-da! we have today's sketch. I'm currently working on a bunch of Minion card game art pieces right now, yesterday I finished sketching up and printing out 3 new ones. Now onto inking and coloring...

8/14/14

Just a study

Nothing too fancy today. I did a little portrait study digital painting in photoshop. It's far from a "finished" piece, it's got about 2 hours of work into it. No plans to go back and work on this.

8/13/14

Back to 2099!

So Marvel fairly recently (re)introduced Spider-Man 2099 into the main Spider-Man continuity/timeline and has his own new book. I've read a few 2099 stories but honestly had never read the first issues until today. I picked up a few of the original 90's issues with his origin. The story was surprisingly better than I had anticipated, though definitely had the 90's gritty element that comics all seemed to get swept up in. But for now it looks like Spider-Man 2099 (Miguel O'Hara)  is stuck in present day New York until he can find a way to get back, back to the future!

8/12/14

Robin Williams - Genie

Yesterday brought us the sad news of Robin William's passing. His voice, characters, and comedy were so profound. I remember watching Aladdin when it first came out, and who didn't love Genie? The lovable goofiness and friendliness of Robin Williams will be greatly missed.

8/11/14

The Ice King

I just finished reading the Adventure Time Mathematical Edition and was feeling inspired to draw some more Adventure Time art. The Ice King has quickly become one of my favorite characters in the series.

8/10/14

Boston Comic Con

Hey everyone! I had a chance to go and check out the Boston Comic Con this past weekend. It was an awesome show and I had a blast checking out some really great art and sitting in on an Adventure Time panel (and meet the comic book illustrators, Shelli Paroline and Braden Lamb!) Of course I also stopped by to meet comic book legend, Neal Adams and get a signed Spider-Man print. I'm looking forward to a couple of pieces of art that should be arriving in the mail soon. I'm going to keep the details under wraps until then...

8/8/14

Minion Art - Wild Willy

Some more Minion art. This guy here is called "Wild Willy" I suppose he would have to be pretty crazy to come at you with a spark - I know I'd get out of his way.

8/7/14

Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na BATMAAAN!

I've been doing a lot of sketchbook drawings recently - it's not that I don't use it on a regular basis, but I've been working in it more than usual. I've already mentioned it before, but I find sketchbooks are some of the most important tools that I use. I sketch, doodle, draw, and write down ideas that I may forget later (so it's a good thing I documented it). Today's sketch is none other than the caped crusader himself - BATMAN! I recently watched a 3-part comic book documentary by PBS, it was really great - there was a ton of information and history on the industry that I was unaware of. If you're looking for info here's a link to the PBS site with episode descriptions: PBS SUPERHEROES

8/6/14

ADVENTURE TIME!

I couldn't draw Finn and not draw Jake. It's simplistic but it makes me happy to have an entire sketchbook page of Jake.

8/5/14

What Time is it?!

ADVENTURE TIME!

Guess who's been watching Adventure Time? I started and finished seasons 1 and 2 (currently up on Netflix) and I reallllllyyyyyy liked it. I had watched the Pilot more times than I can count years and years ago when that was first released and just never got around to watching the actual show - strange, I know. The good news is that there are 104 more episodes that I haven't seen yet, so the adventure isn't over yet! Today's work is just a drawing out of my sketchbook colored with marker.

8/4/14

Rocket Raccoon Sketch

I really think Guardians of the Galaxy hit it out of the park. It was a really funny, enjoyable, action-packed sic-fi/comic book movie. Without a doubt Rocket and Groot stole every scene. Here's a quick Rocket sketch colored with some of my new Prismacolor markers (hurray for new art materials!).

7/30/14

Reptar on ICE!

While at the Brass City Comic Convention someone inquired if i had any Rugrats art, and sadly I did not. I set out to rectify that problem and I figured "What better character to draw than REPTAR?!" Now if you grew up in the 90's watching Rugrats episodes over and over again there's no way you can forget "Reptar On Ice" the musical. After watching that episode again I had to do a piece based on the epic love story of when a lizard takes a wife. Now, back to inking another childhood inspired piece...

7/29/14

Minion Art - Swiss Army Bandage

"So I cut myself with the knife part of my swiss army bandage, at least now I can use it to cover up the wound!"

7/26/14

Minion Art - Nukeity Goodness

I suppose the remote control detonator wasn't quite as clever as he thought? On another note, you can barely see it and I know it won't show up in the final card art (too small) but the Ultimate Killing Machine can be spotted in the bottom right corner destroying the city.

7/23/14

Happy Batman Day!

Happy Batman Day! DC Comics has declared today, July 23rd, 2014 as Batman day in celebration of 75 years of Batman. Now I'll admit I've always been a Marvel fan over DC, but that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy DC stuff - especially Batman. As a 90's child I grew up watching the Batman animated series that ran 1992-1995, and a little bit of Batman Beyond (1999-2001).

It's really interesting to see the evolution and depictions of the character in comics, television, and the big screen. So here's a sketch of my favorite Batman parody!

7/22/14

Brass City Comic Con

Big shout out to everyone who came by at the Brass City Comic Con this past weekend! I had a great time! I will definitely be looking into jumping into some more conventions next summer. I've been pretty busy with a few things, expect some new posts with some Minion card game art in the very near future next.

7/17/14

I AM ZIM!

I had the lucky opportunity to meet the Richard Horvitz, the voice actor for Zim (among many others like Billy from The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Daggett from the Angry Beavers, and Alpha 5 from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers!) at ConnectiCon in Hartford this past weekend. I couldn't pass up getting an autographed Zim Photo.

Of course I needed to go and create a Zim sketch:

In other news: I will be at The Brass City Comic Con this Sunday. The show runs 10:00-3:00. I'll have a table with prints, comics, and I'll be doing sketches so stop by!

7/11/14

Glenn The Frog Knight

I know I'm a little late to the party on this one, but I just started playing Chrono Trigger for the first time! This game has all the elements of the 32-bit RPGs that I grew up with - I just never had a chance to play the game on the SNES, and due to the rarity of the actual SNES cartridge I found a Playstation downloadable version. I really like Glenn, I think he's my favorite character in the game - or maybe between this and the last Kermit piece I just subconsciously really like frogs. Who knows?

About the sketch above: I recently upgraded to a printer that will scan and print 11x17 (Hurray!) so I've now started working my sketches in Photoshop, printing them out on a piece of 11x17 bristol board in very light blue ink. After it's all printed I grab my trusty brush pen and ink it. I took a few small liberties to make Glenn look a little more frog-like.

7/1/14

Kermit the Spider-Frog

Here's a look at my newest piece, Kermit the Spider-Frog! I created this one for my art show at Barley Vine (the work will be up there for a little while so check it out!).  I've just added him to my store, anddddd I'm having a sale on prints, $10.00 each, take a look!

So a little history on this one:

A couple of years ago I did a sketch of Kermit the Frog as Spider-Man, it was a quick drawing but I always liked the idea. So while browsing some of my old work I stumbled across it and decided it needed a facelift. So I made this piece like I've been making my other recent works, and colored this digitally instead of traditionally. Here's the old one:

Draw Stuff in Your Own Style

A reminder from my sketchbook. I'll admit it, I can very easily get lost looking at beautiful work by other artists - and think "OH I SHOULD DO THAT!" This is usually followed by frustration as I realize that I can not in fact create work the same way they do. Now don't get me wrong, I think it's great to be inspired by others and good practice to try things out of you comfort zone. That being said, I think it's also important to be realize your own uniqueness and talent and apply that to what you observe and learn.

As for me, I've spent my whole life to get to where I am now with my art. More than likely it will change and evolve as I grow as an artist, but that's a good thing. It's ok if I can't pick up a pen and draw exactly the same way as another illustrator. They already make their art, I need to go and make mine.

Be comfortable with yourself. Draw your style.

6/5/14

Megaman Sketch

Well I decided to do some sketching and who better than Megaman!? I'm still working on Minion card art, but it's really nice to take a break and draw something else for a little bit. I really enjoyed playing the Megaman games on NES as a kid, though I must confess my favorite of all time was in fact the first "Megaman X" game for SNES - I've played that game SO many times, it's just so much fun every time - I even downloaded the copy for my iPad - though nothing beats the feel of holding the SNES controller as you pull the cord just far away enough from the TV to not pull it completely out of the system...and blowing in the cartridge when it doesn't start up the first time.

Oh and it's for sale in my new store!

6/2/14

Minion Art - Pixelated Triangle of Power

I had a ton of fun illustrating this card. It's one of my personal favorites, especially having grown up playing the Zelda games (Ocarina of Time holds a special place in my heart). I remember sitting in front of the television with the NES controller in my hand, I don't think I ever finished the original game as a kid - but I was able to make my way thought the SNES "A Link to the Past". When I popped the "Ocarina of Time" cartridge into the N64 for the first time I was floored, being able to play as Link in 3D! I was glued to that game for weeks until I finished it - and even then I've played it start-to-finish more times than I would care to count.

I opened a store!

I have just opened my online store, take a look! I will be adding new products to the store in the near future, so stay tuned!

Some more art for Minion! This one is for the card "Ultimate Killing Machine"

Minion Art - A Knight Who Says "NO"!

It's been a very busy week. I've been hard at work creating art for MINION.  The Kickstarter was successful and met it's minimum pledge amount! It currently has about 24 hours left and is trying to hit a couple more stretch goals. Check out the site here:

MINION - Thee Kickstarter Page!

Anwyho, Dan and Dan posted up another one of my works with a Kickstarter update so I can share this one. Take a look, it's a "Knight who says 'No'"

Minion Art - Modified T-Rex

Hey everyone! I would like to share some very exciting news:
I have joined TEAM MINION!
Allow me to ask your questions for you, and then answer them.

What are you talking about?
I will be creating art for Minion cards!

Ok...what is Minion?
It's a really fun strategy card game. I'll let you take a look for yourselves, so here's the link to their  Kickstarter Page!

You sound excited.
I am.

So without further adieu, here is the art for one of the cards in the game: Modified T-Rex

Hundreds of Tiny Little Lines

I've been hard at work on a series of new illustrations. Here's some shots of some works-in-progress. Expect to see finished versions in the future!

These drawings will eventually be scanned and colored digitally like the Batman, Wolverine, Captain America, and Hellboy pieces I've posted.

4/7/14

Hellboy!!!

(How do I kill it?)

3/31/14

3/24/14

Wolverine!!!

(He's the best at what he does)

3/16/14

Batman!!!

(Na na na na na na na na BATMAN!)

Well I've been working on a series of works that I'll be posting as I get them finished. I'm trying something new here and using only a Micron .01 pen for these works. In fact this work helped to inspire the style I used for the Day 24 - Wolverine + Superman = ? drawing from the 30 - Day Challenge.

30 - Day Drawing Challenge List

I figured I would post up the list for any of you who are curious or would like to try out this particular challenge. The the list the was created by me and fellow artist Kelley Griffin. We combined some of our ideas with those we found online and borrowed from other lists. Enjoy!

3/6/14

Day 30 - What Computer Printers Will Look Like in 30 Years

"What computer printers will look like in 30 years"

(Yes. I DO know that it says "in 30 years")

WOW. Done. Done done done done done. It's been a fun 30-days with this drawing challenge. I've had a chance to really do some interesting drawings, some I loved, some I didn't have much time for and were done hurriedly, and some I spent WAY too much time on. All in all, I'm glad I stuck with it, but for now I'm going to take a break drawing challenges and just bury my head in some regular 'ole sketchbook/art project work, I have a few things I've been working on, some I've been putting off until the challenge is over. Expect to see some new works up in the near future. Thanks for taking a look!

3/5/14

Day 29 - Yourself As a Cyborg

"Yourself as a cyborg"

(Ready for anything!)

3/4/14

Day 28 - Something I'm Afraid Of

"Something I'm afraid of"

(20 hours into the game and BAM!)

Ok. I know. It's not something truly terrible or life-altering, nor something anyone should fear, but it's pretty upsetting when you find out that game file you just spent the past 5 weeks on is gone... and if you ever want to complete the game you're going to need to play it all over again - even that really really tough part that took you a couple of hours, oh and that tedious boring part, yeah, going to need to replay that part too. See? Pretty awful stuff.
